Quilt no 23

Permission to mix straight with wavy lines, cut off the points of triangles, tip the pin wheels, be bold with colour and so much more.  Cotton fabrics, pieced, quilted using invisible thread.

This is made with machine appliqué and machine quilted and ribbon embroidery.

The Buzzing of the Bees
18 Inches top to bottom and 10 inches at the widest point
This is a piece that was started in a Alicia Merrett workshop.  I have added beads and sequins and printed onto it with some Thermofax screens.  It is quilted with perle cotton.

Made with Dacron batting fabric is cotton and this is my first hand quilting.


Quilt no 17


Early Spring

Made using natural & man made fibers.  No "live" or animal products. The background is comprised of 2 upholstery swatches which have been cut into strips, woven together, and stitched using a decorative machine stitch.  I then straight line quilted using variegated threads.  The tree is raw edge applique with a variegated brown/yellow/gold thread.  The leaves are made from various tiny cuts of fabric with shiny fabrics/tule overtop.  They are 3 dimensional.

The fabrics for the plates were purchased at last years National Quilt Show and were a buy two get one free offer. They are Amy Butler fabrics. The piece is machine pieced and hand quilted.

Life's too short to dance with ugly men!
45cm square (approx 17.5")
Background: Cotton Duck machine stitched on to an army blanket.  Celtic motif: Pumice Gel stencilled on to Kunin Felt. Randomly stitched on to Pelmet Vilene then zapped before stitching to background.  Wording: Latin phrase printed on to dressmaking tissue paper using a laser printer and adhered to the background with Golden Polymer Medium just prior to adding colour.  The whole piece has been given a layer of gesso before being coloured with Golden Fluid Acrylic Paints in Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, Transparent Red Iron Oxide and Paynes Grey.

Desert Rose
14" square
Stained Glass; Fabric is 100% cotton. Background is varying shades of light blue; flower is pale pink; border is burgundy with black bias to form the stained glass effect.  It was a windy day for taking photos so the last tab is anchored under a pot.

On a Summer's Day
56" around the outside
Made of hand dyed fabrics in various cottons and silk noile. The technique used was curved piecing which was then top stitched and embellished with circles and buttons.

For the center, I used the Geese in a Circle pattern from Don't Call Me Betsy blog, paper-pieced in brights with black on black.  The borders are paper-pieced flying geese.  The borders are quilted with feathers and the center is a combination of meandering, a large swirl and half feathers on the outer edge of the geese.  It has a hanging sleeve

Quilt no 10


TREE BONES 
12x12 inches. 
Velvet fabric (interfaced) discharged trees, then paint and texture added for 'ageing'. Moon outline placed, woodland background and trees outlines added with FME. Layer batting and scrim over reverse side, organza over the front. FME around tree shapes, moon and woodland area again. Cut away organza over tree bones moon (add layer of paint) and woodlands to make light and shade. Add backing fabric, go around trees again with FME to make the sandwich complete.Finish edges with zigzag over chenille wool. Add sleeve and label.

This could be used as a wall hanging or table runner. My inspiration came from Gail Lawther's Glimpses of New Zealand book. The quilt was made using batik fabrics and was finished with free machine quilting, some hand quilting and a few beads.

Machine quilted and embellished with 3 dimensional pinwheels and prairie point wings, buttons, and hand dyed wool ("hair") comb.

The fabrics in this quilt are cotton and is machine quilted in a pale yellow thread.

 This quilt has bleach discharge techniques on batik, thread painting, ink dyes, raw edge appliqué, chenille embellishment, and is bordered with traditional piecing.  The theme of the quilt is upward motion uniting with a higher source and the flurry of tiny triangles at the top represent angels.  Have not found the perfect title for it yet!  It is one of a series of three.
